Robert Alex Sutter 1888 or 1889 Pennsylvania
Donald Sutter 10/31/10
Robert and family appear in the 1930 census of Denver, CO misindexed under the name Sutten. He first married at age 21 and she at age 23 (ca 1910).
In the 1920 census they are living in Cleveland, OH. Robert's parents were born in Ireland and Scotland. Louise immigrated in 1893.
I found the WWII draft card for a Robert Alexander Sutter, born July 20, 1889 in Pittsburgh and living in Pittsburgh. His wife's name however was Aurelia. I could not find a WWI draft card for him.
The 1910 census of Pittsburgh shows a Robert Sutter 20 as the son of David 48, born Ireland, and Margaret 41, born Scotland. He immigrated in 1887 and she in 1888.
The 1900 census of the same family shows David was born April 1864, Margaret, born March (what should be 1868 instead of 1886), Robert A., born July 1892. I believe the ages for several of the children are off by 3 years.
The 1910 census of Munhall, Allegheny Co., PA shows a Louise G. Morton 22 as the daughter of Alexander 53 and Jessie 52.
The 1900 census has the same family in Mifflin Twp., Allegheny County. Louise was born July 1888 in Scotland, Alexander was born Feb 1851 in Ireland and Jessie June 1858 in Scotland. The family immigrated in 1893.
The same family is listed in the 1891 Scotland census of Blantyre, Lanarkshire.
When the S.S. Pomeranian landed in New York on Dec 30, 1892 it included the same family members found in the censuses above. They were headed to Greensburg, PA.
It seems Margaret Sutter made three trips back to Scotland 1905, 1920 and 1927. The 1920 trip lists the nearest relative in the country she was from as her father Thomas Foy. The 1881 Scotland census of Old Monkland, Lanarkshire includes a Margaret Foy 13 as the daughter of Thomas 32 and Janet 32.
Some of these records you can look at for free at labs.familysearch.org and Ancestry.com. For those you cannot see for free I suggest checking with your local libraries to see if they have Ancestry or Heritage Quest.
With more searching you can probably find more. I suggest getting Robert and Louise's death certificates and obituaries to help confirm what I have found. More than likely they got their marriage license at the Allegheny County Register of Wills office. It may have data on the parents. For research in the Pittsburgh area check with the Western Pennsylvania Genealogical Society, Historical Society of Western Pennsylvania and the Pittsburgh Family History Center to see if they can help you.
