Centenary Cook Book (Can't ID town or date as the first 12 pages of the book are gone but the advertisers are from Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, which was founded in 1835.)
One cup sugar, butter the size of an egg, yolk of one egg, one cup sour milk, one teaspoon soda, one cup raisins, one teaspoon each of cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon and lemon extract, two cups flour. Bake in two layers.
Icing: Two thirds cups sugar, four tablespoons water, one fourth teaspoon cream tartar. Boil until hard when tested in water. Pour over beaten white of one egg and add one teaspoon lemon extract. -- Mrs. Herman Swan.
