Nichole,
I am not descended from George and Sara but am related to both of them. My gg-grandfather Levi T. Swearengin was the uncle of George and Levi's wife, my gg-grandmother, Sarah (Bookout) Swearengin was Sara's aunt. I have both families back to 1700 or before. George's father was named Hugh Tone Swearengin and died in 1865 when George was young. George had two brothers, John Tone Swearengin and Hyram E. "Dode" or "Doag" Swearengin. His mother was Elizabeth (Harley) Swearengin, daughter of Hyram Harley and Elizabeth (Stafford) Harley.
Hugh Tone Swearengin was the oldest son of Eli Swearengin and Sarah Caroline (Jackson) Swearengin. Eli Swearengin had seven sons all who lived in Douglas or Christian Co.s in Missouri. Eli also had a brother, James Swearengin, and a nephew, John Edman Swearengin who lived in Douglas Co., MO and another brother Wade who settled in Lawrence Co., MO. Eli Swearengin was the son of Hugh Swearengin who was born in 1776 in Anson Co., NC and died sometime after 1860 in Jackson Co., TN. Eli was born June 5, 1805 in North Carolina and died May 25, 1854 in Greene Co., MO (later became Douglas County) and is buried in Douglas Co., MO with his wife Sarah Caroline (Jackson) Swearengin who was born July 14 1810 in Jackson Co.,TN and died Aug 15, 1879 in Douglas Co., MO. Hugh Tone Swearengin is buried in the same cemetery although I can no longer find his stone. The grass has appearently grown over it as it lays flat and just says Hugh T. They are all buried at Old Swearengin Cemetery (sometimes called Stafford or Depew Cemetery)just off of Hiway 14 in Douglas Co., MO. George and Sara are buried at Union Chapel Cemetery as are many other Swearengins.
I knew Cordie and Lynn Cornelison, they were my grandparents neighbors and friends. I was playing in their yard one time when I was a kid. My grandparents were in their house and a Tom turkey came up out of the woods and chased me up on their porch. Lynn and Cordie lived right next to Wagner Schoolhouse. My mom taught school (1-6 grade) one year at Wagner School.
There is another George Swearengin who married a Nancy Bookout. This George was the son of Hugh Tone's younger brother James E. "Curly Jim" Swearengin. In addition to Levi and Curley Jim, Hugh Tone had brothers Andy, Eli, William A., and Jordan J. Swearengin and sisters Sarah Caroline (Swearengin) Marsh, Melinda (Swearengin) Ince, and Mary "Polly" (Swearengin) Painter.
Sarah Elizabeth Bookout was the daughter of William Emerson Bookout and Nancy Emeline Sweet. William Emerson Bookout was the brother of Sarah Ann (Bookout) Swearengin, my gg-grandmother, and both were the children of James Oliver "Jimmie" Bookout and Della Elizabeth (Wood) Bookout. James Oliver Bookout was the son of John and Sarah (Vaughn) Bookout. Sarah Vaughn is believed to be half Cherokee from her mothers side. Sarah's father was John Vaughn. Sarah Vaughn was born Oct. 20, 1787 in Washington Co., NC (modern day Washington Co., TN). John Bookout's father was Charles Bookout and Charles Bookout's father was Joseph Bookout (b. 1700 and d. July 1806 in Randolph Co., NC) who is buried in the Quaker Cemetery in Ramsuer, NC although he was not a Quaker(he is mentioned in an old book as an example of non-Quakers buried in Quaker Cemeteries).
Both the Swearengin and Bookout names are of Dutch origin as also is the Cornelison name.
George Swearengin filed a civil war pension claim on his father Hugh who died in 1865 and served in the 72nd Enrolled Missouri Militia. I have not seen the pension file as they have recently started charging a healthy fee for pension files. Two of Hughs brothers also served in the 72nd
and three of his brothers served in other Union outfits. The seventh brother was too young to serve. In fact it seems the sixth brother, "Curley Jim" lied about his age when he enlisted in the last year of the war.
You may come across things that say Hugh Tone was a brother to Eli not his son but I have proof otherwise. Hugh Tone's age in the 1860 census of Webster Co., MO is wrong, it lists him as being born ca. 1817 but the 1850 census of Jackson Co., TN lists him at an age to have been born 1829 which would be correct as the son of Eli.
I have much more on all of these families. All of the descedants of Eli Swearengin that I know about spell the name Swearengin.
