Re: Richard Swait (part of Periam/Wescot
My main interest with Richard Swaitt & Richard 3 Sweet was to show they were not the same person as claimed by others in published works (Torrey, Jaques, etc.)
Richard Swaitt married 15 Dec 1673 at Stonington CT. The births of his five children were recorded at Westerly RI between 23 Feb 1676/7 (Richard, Jr.) and 13 Jun 1687 (Eleanor). Richard Swaitt, Sr., was deceased before 1703/4 as that's when his wife Mehetible is referred to as a widow when she registered an earmark for cattle at Westerly. He was probably born 1652 or before which doesn't seem to make him a good fit, generationwise, to be a descendant of John 1 Sweet. I don't know if his father's name was Sweet or one of the variants, Swaite/Swayte. A search of CT records may turn up something on the origins of Richard Swait/Swayte's surname.
Richard 3 Sweet (John 2-1)married Priscilla Carpenter (don't know when). Richard 3 Sweet was a Baptist church elder at Kingstown RI in the area set off in 1721 as N. Kingstown. His wife Priscilla was probably born about 1663 based on when her mother, Pricilla Benet, died (20 Oct 1663)in MA. It seems reasonable Pricilla & Richard married about ca.1680, and their children born starting in the 1680's.You list their names as:
John , b abt 1688
Wm, b abt 1689
Priscilla, b abt 1693
Benjamin, b abt 1698
In addition to the above children, there were also Richard, Jr., & Eizabeth & Susannah. All are named in Richard 3's will made 4 Mar 1728 & proved 9 Jun 1744 at W. Greenwich RI.
I don't know of any records giving their dates of births. Those records may have been destroyed in fires at N. Kingstown. However, there are some records in E.Greenwich for their marriages that can be used to estimate about when they were born.
I believe son Benjamin married at E. Greenwich 11 May 1721 Margaret Hamett, so the birth date of 1698 you have for him sounds about right. Elizabeth may have been the one who married Jos Weaver 21 Feb 1705/6 at E.G., so she was probably born about 1687 or so.Susannah, may have been the one who married at E.G. 9 Dec 1708 Abner Spencer, so she may have been born about 1690. I am not absolutely certain that the aformentioned are the same children. I am certain though John 4 married Lydia (__). John's will was made in 1744 at N. Kingstown RI, and Lydia's will in 1754. They had a son named Richard, by the way.
Richard 4 (son of Richard 3), married Fear Jones at E.G. in May of 1712 [Arnold]. They resided at W.Greenwich RI. There are various references to this Richard in the town council meetings of W. Greenwich. The 8 Sep 1757 meeting says "Richard Sweet very much ailing."The 1 Apr 1758 meeting says he is "chargeable" [to the town]. On 5 Aug 1758 "Jeremiah Ellis is ordered to make children of Richard Sweet pay for his support."On 7 Oct 1758, Wm Hopkins is paid for funeral expenses for Richard Sweet. This is the only record of Richard 4's (Richard 3, John 2-1))death that I have found.
Richard 4's dau, Freelove, married Nathan Niles in 1739. They are my direct ancestors. In researching Freelove's ancestry I ran across the claim (now a myth) that Richard 4 Sweet had a first wife Elizabeth Jaques whom he supposedly married in 1704.(This error also appears in Arnold's VR). It was actually Richard Swaitt, Jr., (b 1675/6)who married Elizabeth Jaques in 1704, Richard 4 Sweet would have been too young.
