Re: Sweeten Murder - 1924 Ina, Illinois
I am the G Grandson of Wilford Sweeten. The last name is spelled Sweeten.I have overheard some of the details of the demise of Wilford. The family is reluctant to talk openly about it because of the bad stigma that attached to the Sweeten name.In fact Wilford had three sons. Two of which changed thier last names as small boys to avoid redicule. The boys were Denty, Byford, and Stanton. Denty and Stanton changed thier last names to Moore. Byford (My grandfather) refused to change his last name.Denty had a roller coster life with many highs and lows and liked to assosiate with the Hollywood set back in his day. After he retired from the Marine Corps as a Sargent Major, he managed many of the major hotels in LA and San Diego including The Del Coranodo, the El Cortez and Rosarito Beach Hotel.Denty had one Daughter Denise Moore.Stanton never had any children.Byford was marred to Thelma (Pike)Sweeten. They had Betty June Sweeten and Phillip Ray Sweeten.Phillip marryed Nadine and had Dawn Marie and Mark Alan Sweeten (Thats me).I am now the part owner of that farm in Ina that was the scene of so much tragedy. Not only from the loss of my G Grandfather, but the loss of a father to my Grandfather and my Uncles. My Great Grandmother (the murderer) did spend a small amount of time in prison. My Grandfather Byford and his brothers were ophaned by the crime.I did not even know that here name was Else.Every one referred to here as Mema. Its good to know that there are more Sweetens out there.I have only come accross one other Sweeten in my travels. It would be good to know what the family tree is from Wilford.I have some information about the Sweetens because of the deed to the farm has the history of ownership with the Sweeten name going back to James R.Sweeten 1859 & his son Christopher Columbus Sweeten and Margaret E. Sweeten in 1880. Plese let me know if you can fill in any of the blanks.
