Edgar Haight is important to John C. H. Montgomery's family, because he was his mining partner & the last man to see him alive in Apr. 1852, in Mad Mule Cyn, Shasta, CA. He swore on affadavit the same, when he lived in Buffalo, NY. They mined gold dust & nuggets off the Whiskey Creek. Edgar tried to send money to the Montgomery family, what was left after others took their share, viz. Jas. Montgomery, putative brother, Wm. H. Sherman & son, Geo. Sherman. 1/2 was Edgar's. There are extensive probate records on Edgar in Shasta Co., CA regarding the estate of John CH Montgomery.
Edgar's share of the mine was substantial enough for him to return to Buffalo, NY and begin a ship building business. He was previous a ship builder, which in the field of carpentry required the highest of skills, as well as iron mongery. Exactly when he returned from California, and his family moved from Coldwater, MI, back to Buffalo, NY, is uncertain, but he could not have gotten back before much later in 1852 at the earliest, and probably returned in 1853-4. NY state census of June 1855 showed him & his sister-inlaw, his future wife, Mary Ann Tallman Burrows, living in Buffalo, NY.
