Re: Durling TALMADGE, b1894 NJ or NY, d1959 CA (LEWIS)
Helen Lewis Talmadge
I am very excited.I know quite a bit about my Mothers side of the family, but woefully little about my Fathers.
To begin with...if you give me names of the missing siblings of Grandma Helen's, I will ask Dad & Uncle Richie
and get back with you on these.I now live in So. Indiana, but speak with both on a very regular basis.
Where to begin... I knew Uncle John, he died in his sleep when I was fairly young.Grandma Helen was wonderful. As a matter of fact, I have a picture of her, here in my office.I loved her dearly.
Grandpa Durling and Grandma Helen drove out to California
with all six kids during the summer. It is my understanding that Great Uncle Daniel (Durling's brother), worked at a golf course and aquired a large touring sedan cheap, for the family to travel in.
The family lived on Hardwick Street in Long Beach, CA.Grandpa Durling died when I was 4 or 5 years old of complications of Parkinsons.Oddly, I remember him. When he got very weak, Grandma & Grandpa, either lived with us or Aunt Minnie (Miriam) & Uncle Joe Coyne.
Durling was a mechanic, Helen a housewife.
Durling had a number of siblings, the 3 that Dad remembers are Ben, Daniel and "Jake".Daniel lived in the same duplex as my grandparents and children.
As to locating information on Durling Talmadge's parents, here goes.My Great Grandmother was Native American. On holiday the entire family would go to a reservation in Upstate New York (possibly Mohawk) to visit. This was discussed regularly with all of the Aunts and Uncles, when I was young. They also said that one of Durling's Uncles was the Indian Agent on that reservation.Sorry, no names.
My Great Grandmother was one of the "Indian Princesses", in the Wild West Show. There was a consensus on this. She died young. One of the sons was cleaning a gun. It went off accidentally and she was shot in the head and died.No one EVER discussed which brother.
Durling and Helen Lewis Talmadge's children were Mona Talmadge Hornecker (died in her 30's of brain cancer in Carlsbad, CA), Miriam Talmadge Coyne, Noah Durling Talmadge (Uncle Pete, he changed his name). Richard Talmadge, Carl Edward Talmadge and Robert Talmadge.
