Hi Mick,
Sorry it has taken nearly 2 months to respond to your posting on the Tannatt Family Genealogy Forum. The Tannatt family originated in mid Wales, in Montgomeryshire, and took their surname form the River Tanat or Tanadd.I have records tracing back to c.AD 300, but one can never be sure that the records are totally "pure".This is the case with any family history - one always knows your mother but can only assume that your Dad is your father!!
The Welsh used a patrimonic naming system (e.g. david son of maldwyn - dafyd ap maldwyn) until c. AD 1450 when they started to adopt the surname system used by their English counterparts on the other side of the border. The first male Tannatt to adopt the Tannatt surname was Thomas Tanat of Abertanat, son of Jevan Lloyd Vaughan of Abertanat. This first Tannatt was born c. AD 1516.
I am surprised that you are can only find one Tannatt in OZ because there must be many Tannatts or relations in OZ.Sir Tannatt Edgeworth David is probably the most famous, but I have had contact with many in OZ who are related to the family.I am reluctant to reveal more until I have been advised of your interest, whether you are a professional genealogist or a related member of the family (by marriage or otherwise). You have my e-mail address if you wish to contact me.
May I wish you a happy and healthy new year and bon chance with your investigation.
Kind regards,
Brian Tannatt Nash
