Hi Bryan,
We've 'talked' in the past concerning this Joe Tatman.I'm pasting our e-mail conversation below. My fellow Tatman researcher did get the Civil War pension files for him and I truely feel there is no doubt that he comes from the Tatmans found in Allegany Co, MD, then Perry Co, OH, then on to Hocking Co,OH by the 1840's.He stated in his file that he was born in Hocking Co, OH.
Here are the e-mails:
Hi Laura.
Thanks for the message and all the information.I do think there is a connection between my Joseph Tatman family from Va/Pa? and those in Maryland and Deleware. But so far no one has been able to make even an unsubstantiated claim.Several of the Maryland families have similar names in them so I keep hoping some one will discover something that will allow me to expand the family line back more.
As far as your challenge on Jospeh Tatman and Polly Fisher, I'll have to check my files, but I think most of that line I got from Rootsweb or Ancestry.com.So if you have a more direct source you are probably right.I was planning on doing some updating next week so I'll let you know what I find.
Good hunting!
Bryan

Hi Bryan,
I am also a Tatman researcher! I got interested in the Tatman family when I discovered several marriages into my family tree in the mid 1800's in the Hocking County, Ohio area. For about the last 18 months I have been working on trying to put together the Tatmans who first came to Perry County, Ohio area from Allegany County, Maryland.
From what I've seen on Rootsweb, you research the Tatmans that came through KY to Ohio - Clermont / Brown county area. I have come across some of these families in Greene Co., IL while working on my maternal lines. My main focus right now is tracking the Maryland Tatmans, althought it would be great to someday find the connection between these two lines of Tatmans. Do you feel that there is a connection?
With that said, I have found some information in your family tree posted on Rootsweb that I would like to challenge:
JOSEPH TATMAN b. abt 1838 in Clermont Co, OH
Father: Joseph Tatman b.1810Mother: Polly Fisher b.01 Jan 1813 in Clermont Co., OH
I believe you have attached the wrong marriage (Mary J. Smith in 1861 - Pickaway Co., OH) and children (Rosella Fidelia, William H., Jonas, Sarah C., Eunice) to this Joseph Tatman. I believe the correct Joseph Tatman is the son of Joseph Tatman and Matilda Cherry - part of the Perry Co., OH families. Here's my argument:
Joseph Tatman b.15 Apr 1839 in Hocking Co., OH
1860 census Harrison, Pickaway Co., OH - Mary J. Smith is the daughter of William and Fidelia Smith. They are living three families away from Joseph's sister Rozilla Tatman and her husband - Jonas Hoover.
1870 census Back, Edgar Co., IL finds Joseph Tatman's family, his father in law, William Smith has moved his family to Embarrass, Edgar Co., IL. Jonas Hoover's family is in nearby Piatt Co., IL with other Tatman families.
1880 census Fairview, Barton Co., KS - Joseph's family now has the following children:
Fidelia R., William H, Jonas, Sarah C., Abia, Eunice.
According to another family tree on Rootsweb by Penni Scialdone-Luntsford who lists one of the her sources as Joseph Tatman's Civil War Records/Pension, these are the full names of the children:
Rosella Fidelia( after Joseph's sister- Rozilla,Mary's mother- Fidelia)
William H. ( Mary's father was William, Joseph also had a brother William)
Jonas Hoover ( Joseph's brother in law, husband of Rozilla)
Sarah Catherine (Mary's sister- Catherine)
Abia George (Joseph's brother- Abia)
Matilda Eunice (Joseph's mother- Matilda Cherry)
It really helps that these children have uncommon names and that those names tie back to Joseph Tatman's (of Hocking Co., OH) family.
I have a friend who descends from the Joseph Tatman and Matilda Cherry line that I have been doing a lot of research for. I'm guessing she will probably want to order the Civil War pension file for Joseph. Then we will be able to document all of this. I did contact Penni Scialdone concerning her family tree entry, but she said she was not the one who did the original reseach and didn't have access to the source material.
