Denis aka Dene Areyas Reille aka Relyea aka Relje was born in 1674 or 1680. He resided first in 1690 in Marlboro in Ulster County. He was French Huguenot, later Dutch reformed Church as sponsor in 1693 in New Platz, Ulster County, New York. He resided at Old Man's Kil in 1697. He was on the tax roles in 1724/25 to Marlboro in Ulster County, New York. He died abt 1725 or 1765 in Marlboro, Ulster, New York.
Born and raised in a relatively safe period, because officially the French religious wars ended in 1598, when King Henry IV signed the Edict of Nantes. The edict granted the Huguenots the right to exist, to worship openly except within five leagues of Paris, to enter the universities. The edict was not motivated by any distaste for suffering. Rather, it was a sign of weakness. Henry IV could not possibly defeat the Huguenots, who had groomed themselves into a military force to reckon with. The Huguenots controlled much of Southwestern France; there they were the persecutors rather than the persecuted. And a lot of the educated men needed to run the country were Huguenots. Henry IV needed their support.
The atmosphere the Edict of Nantes fathered was that of an armed truce. The edict said that Huguenots could fortify 100 towns, and they did, they armed towns which by the nature of thier sites were natural fortresses--like Montauban and La Rochelle--to the teeth. Most towns, where Huguenots were a minority, had invisible yet clearly drawn lines. Protestants and Catholics stayed on their respective sides. Hotheads used the safety of their sides as a base for skirmishes. But it was possible, exercising a bit of caution, and swallowing some pride, for a Huguenot to live a normal life, and we may assume that Dene Reille did so.
Though most Huguenots were peasants, a large percentage of them were made up of the intelligentsia of the day--craftsmen, university-educated people, civil servants. The Huguenots were a repressed minority, but they were not underprivileged. Dene was very likely a cut above the norm of his day in skill or education (please do not infer from this, however, that all Ralyas were educated: Dene's grandson, David, the revolutionary war soldier, could neither read, write, nor sign his name).
We may assume that Dene led a comfortable life in France, which ended overnight. America at the time offered anything but comfort. Though a few people may have gone to America with visionary idealism, most went out of sheer desperation because they had to, and Dene would be one of these. Denis first appears in May 1693 in records of French Huguenot Church of New Paltz, New York at baptism of Isaac Frere, son of Hugo Frere and Marie Anne LeRoy. He is documented in the Relyea Family by Mary Knight Crane in New York GBR, Jan 1924, pp 62ff. and in the "Dutcher Family Records He settled on the grant of land given to Captain John Evans, patent dated 1695 in Ulster County, New York. He was the first settler of the Town of Marlboro and lived on the stream called Old Man's Kil in 1697. At one time he was supposed to have occupied the stone house on the Hudson just south of Juffrow's Hook, now called Blue Point. He paid taxes in Marlboro and Plattskill in 1714-15, 1718. He was a miller and lived to be very old and was called Old Denis. From him are descended the numerous families of Relyea's who have scattered all over the country.
...and it is quite certain that Dennis Ralje (Relyea), or as he was afterwards called "Old Dennis" was settled on a stream that is now called "Old Man's Kill" at the present village of Marlborough soon after Evans got his Patent (granted c1690). He was the first settler of the town of whom we have knowledge; and the stream or kill there was called after him. There is no record that any white man set foot in what is no the Town of Marlborough previous to 1684. It was originally a part of the "Paltz Patent" granted by the Colonial Governor in 1678. The first settler was Dennis Relje, sometimes called "Old Denis" and "The Old Man". His name appears in the precinct of Highland tax rolls as "Denis Relje" in the years 1714, 1715, and 1718. In the tax roll of 1724 adn 1725 it appears as "Old Denis". The Kill or Creek at Marlborough Landing is named after him. The first mention we find of any Relyea is when the name of Dennis Relji appears as godfather at the baptism of a child of Hugo Freer and his wife Mary LeRoy in 1693. Dennis' wife's name was Joanna (Jannetje) LeRoy. She and Hugo Freer's wife were sisters. Dennis Relji long occupied the house on the Hudson just south of Juffrow's Hook, as the point was caled where the south bounds of the patent struck the river. He adn his wife had several children baptized in the Kingston church - David in 1703, Claudina in 1706, and Hester in 1708. Jeanne Elizabeth (Jannetje) Le Roy was born on Mar 28 1679 in St. Joseph, Charlesbourg, Quebec, Canada. She was baptized on Mar 29 1679. She was admitted to the Dutch Church on Apr 3 1703/4 in Kingston, Dutchess, New York. She died after 1720. Admitted to the Dutch Church at Kingston, N.Y. April 3, 1703-4.
Jean Giron (uncle of the wives of Hugo Freer & Denis Ralji), came from France to Canada and bought a farm on the River St. Charles near Quebec. He married Madeleine Deschalets. He was from [Creances], bishopric of Coutances, in Manche, the long finger with Cherbourg at the tip which points from the north of France into the English Channel.
In the same year Simeon Le Roy, who was a master carpenter, bought land next to his brother-in-law on the River St. Charles. He remained in Quebec until 1679 or later, but in 1681 he had removed to Montreal. While he was in Canada he appears to have been a Catholic, for all his children were baptized by the priests. In 1682 he was in Albany, and thereafter he lived in Kingston, where he was as late as 1701.
In 1704, however, he probably left htere and he was a witness at the baptixm of his grandchildren on Staten Island, in 1706 or 1707. Through his son Francis he was head of the LeRoy family, originally of Dutchess County, and through his son Leonard, or "Jonar" as the Dutch called it, corrupting the French sound, he was head of the "Laraway" family, originally of Schohari County.
All of his children, except Jean, who is mentioned in the letter (which he wrote to his niece Mrs. Hugo Freer of New Paltz) and remained in Canada, married either Huguenots or Hollanders and became Protestants. The following list gives the English equivalent of many of the more puzzling of Dutch Christian names. The final "je" in which so many Dutch names end bears the same relation to them which the "ie" of the English names does to the English. It is a diminutive and applied as a pet name. It is pronounced ye. It is usually applied to women's names but often to those of boys. There are many instances in which it is applied to men. It was no more common for the Dutch to call Anna " Antje" than for the English to call it "Annie." A familiar instance of the diminutive given to men is yet to be found in this county in the modification of the name Cornelius. It is still common to call Cornelius "Case." This is a corruption. The diminutive is correctly given in the list as "Keesje."

Mannheim, most populous (1955 population, 254,000; in 2005, 307,000; coordinates: 49° 29? 20? N, 8° 28? 8? E) city of Baden, Germany, situated at the confluence of the Neckar with the Rhine, founded by Elector Palatine Frederick IV in 1606. The builder was Barthel Janson, a Dutch citizen. The city was destroyed by Tilly in the Thirty Years' War, and rebuilt in 1653 by Elector Charles Louis, who developed it into the chief commercial center of his domain. [By settling Walloons and Huguenots] there he made it a haven of religious toleration and liberty. On 13 November 1688 it was seized by the French and burned the following March. Elector John William engaged Franz Timmermann, the Dutch teacher of Peter the Great, to rebuild it. Mannheim was the capital of the Palatinate 1720-1778; in 1803 it fell to Baden.
It is possible that the Swiss Brethren settlement in Mannheim was older than that of the Hutterian Brethren. Definite information is lacking. Risser, the minister of the Sembach congregation, asserted that "from 1650 on, Mennonite families from the Palatinate and new ones from Switzerland moved into the depopulated city and in inconspicuous quiet formed a small congregation led by their elder; their life and civic industry was by no means a deterrent to the reviving city" (Mennonitische Blätter). The earliest Mennonite lists of die Landesarchiv at Karlsruhe do not mention any Mennonites living in Mannheim. It is possible that they were at first exempt from the redemption fee. Heidelberg reported on 12 February 1662 that there were no Mennonites in its territory, since most of them were living in Mannheim. From Dirmstein it is learned (17 May 1682) that occasionally a preacher came to Obersülzen from Mannheim to hold a meeting. This is proof that there was a Mennonite church in Mannheim at that date. Ernst Müller (p. 315) mentions a letter sent by Peter Lehmann and Rudy Heusser from Mannheim to the Swiss Brethren dated 23 December 1697. (In June 1697 a very destructive fire raged in Mannheim.)
On 10 March 1701 the city council received an inquiry asking whether the Mennonites were considered citizens or mere residents. The reply, dated 6 May, stated that five families were granted citizenship, partly because of the substantial houses they had built and partly on the basis of their peaceableness; but since the council was aware that this procedure was displeasing to the elector they had admitted no more Mennonites the last two years.
On May 9 the city mayor inquired of the elector whether the request of another Mennonite for citizenship should be granted. He said further that the six families living there now and the 20 families living there earlier had not only built well, but had in all respects conducted themselves honestly and compatibly. In June 1702 the Mennonites of Mannheim sent a petition to the elector, requesting that Mennonites moving into the city be permitted to become citizens as heretofore without having to obtain a special concession. This petition also states that before the destruction of the city in 1689 there had been twenty families living there. On 4 July 1702, Jakob Snebly, a Mennonite citizen of Mannheim, requested and received certification of their status from the French occupation authorities, which stated that the Mennonites had complied with all their civic obligations such as statute labor and guard service.
On 27 April 1706 at the request of the city authorities, Christian Blum drew up a list of members: there were 11 families, Christian Blüm, Johann Jakob Schnäbele, Ulrich Mayer, Hans Müller, Christian Eicher, Matth. Bonn, Paulus Enger, Martin Meule (Meile or Mellinger?), Christian Stauffer, Johann Hassert, and the widow of Johann Schüler (?), On 14 May 1706 the mayor sent this list to the elector, and asked whether more should be admitted, since they were making frequent application; also whether preference should be given those who had money to build at once. The reply was that the Mennonites now living in Mannheim should be gradually put out of the city, since they were not to be tolerated in the province. From this time on the Mennonites appear regularly in the registers, which give some interesting testimony concerning their life and status.
In 1717, 19 Mennonite families lived in Mannheim: Hans Jakob Schnebele, Ulrich Mayer, Hans Neukumet, Paulus Engers, Chr. Stauffer, Valentin Christophel, Joh. Christophel, Heinrich ChristopheL Matthias Bonn, Christian Blüm, Ulrich Stauffer, Johannes Fried, Andreas Berg, Jak. Schneblek's widow, Martin Meyli (Möllinger?), Jakob Hauter, Peter Heuffendorf, Chr. Fischart's widow, Philip Noldt, Jakob Hunzinger(?).
In 1738, 23 families: Joh. Hunzinger, Christian Schuhmacher, Andreas Berg's widow, Jakob Schnebele, Konrad Geber, Matth. Baumann's widow, Peter Pletscher, Jakob Cetti, Andreas Hackmann, Jakob Eicher(acker), Jakob Graf, Konrad Gerhard's widow, Joh. Stauffer, Jakob Dahlem, David Bechtel, Nikolas Blüm, Joh. Hutterian Brethren (Hutterische Brüder)
The Hutterian Brethren, also called Hutterites, the Austrian branch of the great Anabaptist movement of the 16th century, was characterized by the practice of community of goods, as first established in Moravia in 1529 and re-established on more solid grounds by Jakob Hutter in 1533. In contradistinction to the other Anabaptist groups the Hutterites had the unique chance to develop their communal life in comparatively peaceful Moravia where, due to a predominantly Slavic surrounding, they lived in relative isolation from the rest of the world. Thus a rich group life developed with a strong sense for their own history. Remarkable is also their extensive manuscript literature (devotional and historical) which made it possible that their teachings and their history, particularly of the beginnings, should become better known than those of any other group of the Anabaptist movement except the Dutch.

In 1710 the Queen, getting pressure from the parties in England,
felt it necessary to restrict emigration from Germany.A group
of Germans, including the Simmendinger family landed in England
after waiting several weeks for permission to cross the Channel.
It is here that the two Simmendiger children died.It is assumed that he and his wife were among the 3,000 Palatines who sailed
from London in a fleet of ten ships in January, 1710.On this voyage some 480 passengers died and one vessel was wrecked on
the American coast.The voyage took six months.After reaching
New York they were quarantined for five months on Nutten (now
Governor's) Island where 250 more succumbed to ship's fever and 84 orphaned children were apprenticed.
The names appearing here may also be found in the Ration Lists of
Governor Hunter, in the Colonial Census of 1710, and at least two
in the List of Apprenticed Children, 1710-1714.

Johann Friederich Thater/Deder was the son of Georg Deter
and Anna Maria Meyer, born January 26, 1723, at Rhinebeck. The records of the New York City Lutheran Church
list the sponsors at his baptism as Johan Friederich Meyer and wife Anna
Barbara. Loonenburg Lutheran Church records list him as being confirmed at Rhinebeck, June 19, 1743. Dutchess County Tax Rolls show Frederick on the Rhinebeck tax rolls from June 1748 to 1775, when his widow is listed. The
records of Rhinebeck Lutheran Church list the death of Johann Friederich during November, 1773, at the age of "51
years."

baptized at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church at Rhinebeck (Stone Church), Dutchess
County, May 27, 1750. The baptismal record lists the parents as "Friderich
Toedter and Catharina Zufeld" and the sponsors as "Georg Toedter and
his wife Anna Maria Maria Magdalena." Note the four names for the wife of the sponsor. I suspect that, as in other cases, there were actually three
sponsors, including the wife Anna Maria and another individual named Maria
Magdalena. Since Anna Maria had a younger sister Anna, born almost ten years later, there is a distinct possibility that Anna died young.

REGISTER OF MEDICAL OFFICERS WHO SERVED TO THE CLOSE OF THE REVOLUTION AND WERE DISCHARGED IN 1783.
As it is impossible at this date to ascertain the names of all the medical officers who served during the Revolutionary war, those only are given in the following table who are known to have been honorably discharged at the termination of hostilities. The list has been obtained from Force's American Archives, from pension returns and Revolutionary muster rolls. The roster of hospital surgeons is believed to be very nearly complete; that of the regimental medical officers is necessarily imperfect from lack of data to ascertain to what regiments many officers were attached, from the want of uniformity in the nomenclature of regiments, and from the fact that during the last year of the war many officers availed themselves of the indefinite furlough granted to all officers, and were never discharged at al

Geo Teator had no records between 1764 to 1768 It appears he may have recived or simply moved south to Georgia where he recived a Brittish Crown grant and returned to Va 1768.
