Re: Variants: Teitelbaum, Titelbaum, Titlebaum, Titleboom, Titleboam, Tittleboam?
As you surmised, the variations of the Teitelbaum name are due to geographical location, the vagaries of the clerks who wrote the name down, etc. My family is from Hungary and their name was spelled as you see it on my message. The name was not originally Teitelbaum but was Farkas and before that Wolf (Farkas is Hungarian for Wolf). The name comes from the 32 Psalm 13 Verse " For the righteous shall florish as the Palm Trees), Teitelbaum means "palm tree". The founder of the Satmar Hasidic Sect was Moses Wolf who changed his name to Tamar which is the Hebrew for Palm Tree and then adopted the Yiddish of Tamar which is Teitelbaum.
