Re: Terens from Luxemburgh
My Terens are from the eastern part of Luxembourg-Echternach and Grevenmacher.I have a couple of Michels but the time frame seems wrong as well as the place of birth. My gggrandfather's uncle Michel was born 8 October 1785 in Beidweiler, Grevenmacher, Luxembourgand then I found another Michel (don't know if he is related yet) born 25 October 1862 in Waldbillig, Echternach, Luxembourg.
If you live in the US, are you familiar with the microfilms of the Luxembourg records that are available through the Mormon Church? If not here are some places to look at:
The U. of St. Thomas has an online index to the 1853-1863 Decennale that can help you get started. There are 4 records shown for the TERNS name. Please read the introduction to the search engine.
Also, look at Therese Becker's website for some general information to help you get started with the Lux. records.
Once you get into the records, the following website can help with the names of places in Lux. It is in 3 languages.
If you are close to the St. Paul, Minnesota area, the U. of St. Thomas has many of the LDS (Mormon church) microfilms of the Luxembourg records as well as a large collection of books relating to Lux. If you can visit there call first to let them know that you are coming.
Also, the Mormon Church has genealogical guides in several languages. If you are going to pursue the Lux records, I would get French, Latin and German. The German will help you with the Lux records although the language is not German from what I understand but it is similiar enough to use the German language guide. I would also get the guide to the French calendar. Records in the late 1790s (?) and early 1800s use the French calendar. Lots of fun trying to figure out what the date is.
You might want to look at variations such as Ternes, Terrens, Therrens, etc. when trying to find your surnames. There are also "alias" which seem to appear in the earlier records. For one of my male ancestors, it appears that he may have taken his wife's maiden.
Following website has pictures of various Luxembourg places.
