Abner W. C. Terry in Lynchburg, VA duel mid-1800s
I had been interested in finding the story of the duel between these two gentlemen since Mr. Terry had been a business associate of my husband's great-great grandfather (John Camden Shields) while they both worked for the newspaper "The Lynchburg Virginian."While visiting the Jones Memorial Library in Lynchburg yesterday, I found two published accounts in books.I have not checked the newspapers of the day yet. After the death of Mr. Terry, J. C. Shields named his next born son Abner Terry Shields. If any of Mr. Terry's descendants don't have this information, I would be glad to supply it.Additionally, when we went to look for the Shields/Hardy family graves, we noticed that they were in the plot in front of the Terry graves. If anyone should be looking for this family, the graves were in the Presbyterian Cemetery (Grace Street) - on the left as you enter and backing up to the chain link fence. They were very close to the front of the cemetery - maybe three sections into it.There was a large obelisk for A. W. C. Terry and 8 more Terry markers.
