Similar Names TEITLOFF
These names are so familiar, and they all came from Prussia that it makes me wonder if they are somehow related.
I can trace my line back to Carl Augusta Charles TEITLOFF dob: 07 Jan 1815 Prussia. He arrived in this county in Feb 1855 with his wife Henrietta (Klapper was her maiden name) and their 3 children, Charles W, Augustia, and Ida.My ggg grandfather was his youngest son, Henry Richard Lewis TEITLOFF, and he was the first of our family that was a naturalized citizen, because he was born in the New York harbor on 2 Feb 1855 as his parents ship was waiting to dock.Carl settled in April 1855 in Pope County IL and farmed 240 acres purchased at 13 cents per acre.
I do not know the ship's name or where in Prussia it may have sailed from. There are quite a few spellings, in different documents from Pope county records and Lutheran church records in Pope & Massac Co. Illinois.Teitloff, Teitlehoff, Titeloff, Teadloff, Therthhoff, were some of the spellings.
It would be interesting if these names were somehow related.Perhaps Carl had bothers and sisters who came here prior to his family or later.I can see where the german language could bet such mixed up spellings when transalted to english!
