Parents of Ada Francis Thomas & Emma Francis Thomas of Clark County, Arkansas
Some people believe (apparently without evidence) that Ada Francis Thomas (1865-1910) & Emma Francis Thomas (1869-1948) of Terre Noir, Clark County, Arkansas, were both daughters of Nelson G. Thomas & Martha Ann Wimberley. Others believe that Emma was the daughter of James Clark Thomas and Mary Elizabeth Lawrence. While Ada was indeed Nelson & Martha's daughter, Emma was not, and neither was Emma a daughter of James & Mary. For one thing, James & Mary's Emma's full name was Jemima Emma Thomas, and she married James Henry Martin according to many sources. For another, the marriage license of William Pebsworth & Emmy Thomas from Clark County, Arkansas (available on FamilySearch.org) contains a note from William to Emmy's father requesting his consent. It's very faint, but you can see it if you zoom in a lot. Mr. Thomas signed his consent as "Jas. N. Thomas." James N. Thomas is listed in the 1850, 1860, 1870 & 1880 US censuses; in 1870 & 1880, Emma was living in his household along with her mother, Narcissa, in 1870 (but Ada was not--she was living in the household of Nelson G.). James was living in the same household as Nelson G. in 1860--they were brothers, and Emmy & Ada were first cousins, not sisters! Please share with everyone you know with an interest in this family.
