Since the information is from 04, I doubt this information will ever be read by the ones that are searching. I am Thomas Aaron Smith (Thom), Son of Margaret Sue Thurmer/Smith, grandson of Oscar Aarom Thurmer and Josie Norwood; great grandson of Mose Aaron Thurmer and Sarah Ford. The previous messages about Mose Thurmer is correct -he was from Knoxville. He lived outside Lenoir City, Tennessee on a farm on Ft. Loudon lake. Betty Fine/Galyon still lives on the original farm; however, most of it has been sold for residential development. She is the grandaughter of Donna Thurmer/Fine (daughter of Mose and Sarah and sister to Oscar) who raised Betty after her mother died in childbirth. She knows a great deal of Thurmer family history. Her email address is email@example.com. I do know that Mose Thurmer was born to Nancy Armstrong out of wedlock. Mose Aaron was named after a Mose Aaron Armstrong. I do not know the relationship to Nancy, but he was probably her father or brother.
My aunt, Gladys Hines/Ward is the daughter of Oscar and Josie. She lives in the same geographical area as the original farm, and she also knows a great deal about family history. Her email address is firstname.lastname@example.org and she is in fragile health although very alert. She took my immediate family to a cemetary in Knoxville, Asbury Cemetary. Many of the Thurmer, Armstrong, and Norwood family members are buried there. It was an intersting trip. Mose Thrumer and Sarah are buried in Lenoir City.
According to family lore, Mose's father, G.H., was from Germany. Supposedly, there were three Thurmer brothers that came to America from Germany. I do not know the year, nor do I know the other brothers' names or where they settled.
There is also a branch of Thurmers in Oliver Springs, TN. which is in very close proximity to Wartburg. There are two Thurmer brothers in O.S., Steve and I can not remember the other one's name. Steve taught with my wife for several years. One intersting little tid-bit on that branch is that the patriach was instrumental in organizing the Ku-Klux-Klan in that area in the early part of the 20th century. I do not remember his name either. But, givent he close proximity of the towns, this gives credibility to Thurmers settling in Wartburg.
Above is about all I know. I do live in Nashville and will return to E. TN. in 2011 after I retire. I can be reached at email@example.com if you would like to make contact. I can provide information on some of the decendents of Mose and Sarah and of course, Oscar. However, Betty, mentioned earlier, knows much more than me.
