Thank you for your response! There are two sites here that I have not looked at yet, hoping they will have information!
The double "N" at the end of the Tiefenbrun name is completely inconsistent here in US. Our branch uses only the one N, but I have cousins who still use the double NN.
The family story is that an official form was filled out with only one N, and my GG Grandfather said "Fine, the name was too long anyway." That's how our name got changed!
I have also heard that the ending of the name denotes Jewish ties with a double n, and non-Jewish with a single n. Haven't verified that however.
