Re: Tietjen @ ColeCamp, Benton Co, Missouri
I've seen the Detjen name as a separate family in the Cole Camp area. I just recently purchased a book from Cole Camp titled "Here We Speak Low German". A Frederick Detjen is mentioned on page 193 as being among those buried after the Cole Camp battle. I also have a soldier buried at the same time, also a Frederick Tietjen.
I recently completed the transcription of the Benton County 1860 Census. It is not uploaded to the server yet, but I expect it to be available to the public very soon. You will be able to access from the Benton County Genweb home page (http://members.aol.com/hrftx/index.htm) as soon as it comes up.
I also completed the Index to the Benton County Probate Files for 1837 to 1920. This is an index only and does not contain the probate
information itself. You can also access this index through the Benton County home page. Follow the "Miscellaneous Resources" link. (Oops, no Detjens. Maybe other surnames...)
As to your theory about Detjens and Tietjens being the same family... I really hadn't given it much thought before. Have you been able to trace your line back to Germany yet? Do you know what town they hailed from? My Tietjens came from Bremervörde, Hanover, Germany in the 1850's. I'm tracing them back from there. (We just recently got the lead that isolated the town. I'm wading through the German church records.) So far, I haven't come across any Koesters.
We'd love to share information with you to try to find a connection. We don't know much about the Kansas connection. Our only contact there is a Hink or Hagenah in Crawford County in 1870. From there, we have nothing. Is Crawford County in your ancestor's area??
Let us know how we can help.
Great great grandson of Herman Tietjen from Bremervörde and Cole Camp.
