There have been many Tigert and McTyeire family members with similar names in the Nashville area since the late 1800s. Do you have any more specifics, such as first names or dates?
I know there is some connection between the historic home at Grassmere and the Tigert family but I don't know exactly what it is. I assume it involves the Shute family, since I know the Shute family owned Grassmere at one time and Holland Tigert's wife was Leila Shute.
The information below might also help you. You can Google some of the names mentioned below and easily find their biographies online, too.
In 1878 John James Tigert (1857 - 1906), born in KY, married Amelia McTyeire (1857 - 1927), born in LA. You can find them in the 1880 Davidson County census. I did recently notice a reference on Ancestry.com to Grassmere being the death place of Amelia.
Amelia McTyeire is the daughter of Bishop Holland Nimmons McTyeire of SC and Amelia Townsend of Mobile, AL. Bishop McTyeire was instrumental in the founding of Vanderbilt University in 1873 and served as president of its Board of Trust for its first 15 years. Amelia McTyeire Tigert also had a younger brother named Holland McTyeire.
John and Amelia Tigert had 3 sons and 3 daughters. Their oldest son was Holland McTyeire Tigert (1880 - 1948). Holland Tigert was a medical doctor in Nashville and was married to Leila Shute.
Their second son, John James Tigert (1882 - 1965) was president of the University of Florida from 1928 - 1947.
Hope this helps!
