Dear Tonya Frost.
Your query is dated Jan, 2002, so you probably have received an answer to your query about "Willis Tillet and Nancy Mann Davis".But according to the site, no followups were posted.
I am new to the genforum site and was surprised to see my name mentioned in a couple of other replies to queries.
I was under the impression that Nancy was Nancy D. MANN, rather than Nancy Mann Davis.
She married Willis Tillett from Kitty Hawk, on the Outer Banks, the son of William and Louisa Best Tillett.
His parents are buried in the Austin Cemetery in Kitty Hawk.
William Tillett died June 11, 1859, age 59 years
Louisa Best Tillett died July 7, 1857, age 43 years.
Their young unmarried son Thomas J. Tillett was born Aug 13, 1839 and died Mar 6, 1867, and is buried near them.
Louisa was the daughter of Edmon Best of Kitty Hawk, but I am uncertain of her mother.Louisa's sister Elizabeth Best Owens, wife of Joseph Owens, lived on land where Edmon Best originally lived across the road from the William Tillett land on their west.
WILLIS and NANCY TILLETTsigned a deed with his siblings and their spouses to Elder Avery Joseph Austin for the Kitty Hawk land they inherited from Louisa and William Tillett.
The cemetery south of the land was named for Elder Austin who was from Roanoke Island and a minister of the Providence Primitive Baptist Church of Kitty Hawk. But the cemetery existed before Elder Austin moved to Kitty Hawk.
The Austin heirs sold the William Tillett landto my maternal grandfather's brother, Wm. Thomas "Tom" Beacham.(My grandfther was "Cader" Beacham Jr.)
Their mother was Letitia Tillett, wife of Cader Beacham anddaughter of Avery Tillett, born 1821, and Fanny Harris Tillett, born 1820, who are also buried in Austin Cemetery.
I believe there is a possibility that Avery Tillett born 1821 was also the son of William Tillett but by an earlier wife whose identity I do not know. But that is only speculation.
Willis Tillett's brother Samuel B. Tillett also lived in Manns Harbor area of Tyrrell County and signed the deed to Avery Austin. His wife was Mathilda and so far as I know, they did not have children.
William and Louisa Tillett had a daughter Sarah "Sally" Tillett, their oldest child, who married Moses D. Lane.I believe he was from Pasquotank. They lived in 1860 census in the Kitty Hawk house (after her parent's died) with her siblings. They bought the Austin land in Wanchese, Roanoke Island, and lived there the rest of their lives.Their graves are in Wanchese.
Daughter Cynthia Tillett married Little John Pugh Jr. and lived in Wanchese also.
Daughter Anny Tillett married Samuel D. Hooker of Wanchese.
Daughter Abigail "Abby" Tillett married Daniel W. Hayman of Kitty Hawk as his 2d wife and they settled in Tyrrell, too,
and I am told had 15 children.
Wm and Louisa's daughter Elizabeth Tillett married Samuel Mann Jr.
The Avery Tillett who settled in Manns Harbor among the other Tilletts and Manns was from Kitty Hawk, too, the son of Samuel and Sally Beacham Tillett of Kitty Hawk. Avery settled there after marryingfirst wife Penelope Mann.
I cannot tell you exactly how that Avery's father Samuel was related to William Tillett, but I know from family records that Samuel was born 1811.
