Re: Tillinghast at University of South Carolina, 1810
Elton, I want to make sure I'm clear on this. Based on information you provided to me before, Daniel H. Tillinghast, who married Frances Earle, and Thomas Greene Tillinghast, the War of 1812 hero, were sons of Dr. Henry H. Tillinghast and Elizabeth Greene.
I have a book that says Henry and his family were among the first settlers of Columbia, South Carolina. I found a petition online from Thomas G. Tillinghast and Daniel H. Tillinghast, asking that a grant of land on Jackson Creek, Richland County, South Carolina (Columbia), be delivered to them upon payment of a bounty. The date says 1813, which would have been after Henry had died and shortly before Thomas went missing at sea.
I have found a number of documents that show Daniel as surveyor general of South Carolina. One of these documents was from 1819 in Richland County, but I have found maps of Charleston he commissioned and land grants he signed for York County, S.C., where I live.
