After a bit more digging I'm fairly confident that John Tilghman/Tillman of Craven County, the man who went on to become a State Representative and had a son by the same name who was a Craven County Militia officer, was from a Tilghman line that came out of Virginia and was present in Granville County, North Carolina by the 1750's (probably the same John Tillman found in 1755 Granville tax records).

I found a copy of this John Tilghman's probate notice in a Raleigh newspaper and it appears to name individuals that link to that line. The Virginia Tilghman line is that of Roger Tilghman and is not directly related to the Gideon Tilghman of Maryland line that produced the Tilghman individuals who lived in Western Craven County, Dobbs, Jones, and Lenoir and who are present at the same time and only separated by about 30 miles.
