I have always understood (primarly from Stephen F. Tillman's book on the Tilman/Tillman/Tilghman family) that (1) Lucy Hix was Thomas Sr.'s only wife and that (2) Thomas Jr. married Susan Moon.Only in recent years did I learn that Susan evidently died rather young and Thomas Jr. married again, his second wife being Hannah Morris, daughter of one Hugh Rice Morris.
However, if it's the Moons in whom you're interested, there's a rather puzzling note in the William and Mary Quarterly (volume or issue 252, if I understand the intent of the cousin who copied it for me) that the funeral of "Mrs. Tilman in Albemarle" was held May 5, 1763;.then the same lists includes "Thomas Tilman's sife if Amherst" on the same date. (Curious!)However, although some researchers seem to think that this was Susan, that fact would mean that she was not the mother of ANY of Thomas's children, since the oldest, Nathaniel, was born in 1765.The four-year gap between Nathaniel and the next child, Zachariah, makes me think that Susan died after having Nathaniel, and Thomas Jr. remarried a year or two later.
As for Thomas Jr.'s sister Winifred, her name is sometimes spelled Winefred or Winnefred. That last spelling is also the name of Thomas's ggm, but Lucy Hix/Hicks also had a sister named Winefred, mentioned by that apelling in their father's will.Just a few minutes ago, I came across a note of the younger Winefred's marriage record (i. e. to Richard Moon), giving her full name as "Winefred Hicks Tilman."Now I can't find it!
I don't know that this is much help. The cousin (now deceased) who gsve me the information about Winefred and Richard supposed that it was likely that brother and sister had married sister and brother, but that's not very concrete! If you could find the will of a Mr. Moon that mentions a son Richard and either a daughter Susan or a grandson Nathaniel Tilman, that would clinch it.But genealogical research is full of elusive Holy Grails of that sort!
