Mr Alderton your post was way back in 2001. However I had a reason to Google Billy Tingle and came a cross it.My brother and I were taught boxing ,swimming and cricket by Tingle in Hong Kong in the early 50s ! We subsequently both boxed for Bedford School and my brother captained the 1st Eleven so Billy was quite effective !

I dont know whether you are aware of a book : " Captives of Empire " - just published by Greg Leck (who is active on the China section of this website) and which is an outstanding piece of work on the internees in Shanghai and Hong Kong during the war. I had just started reading it when I came across a photo of Billy Tingle in Shanghai. !!!
