Obituary of the Honorable ROBERT C. TITUS from the BUFFALO MORNING EXPRESS, Sunday April 28, 1918.
Robert C. Titus is dead at 79 County commissioner of jurors and former justice of Supreme Court dies, Was CZOLGOSZ Counsel Assisted Loran L. Lewis in distasteful task of defending McKinley’s slayer. Mason of Highest Degree Was member of supreme council of Scottish rite.Served country in Civil War.
Robert C. Titus, commissioner of jurors and former justice of the Supreme Court, died yesterday morning at his home, No. 702 Seventh Street.He had been in ill health for some time, but was not confined to bed until three days ago.The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 o’clock.Burial will be at Armor, NY.Surviving him are his son, Lieutenant Allan S. Titus, and a daughter Mrs. Amy Titus Worthington. Judge Titus was 79 years old, having been born at Eden, NY on October 24, 1839.After receiving his early education in rural schools he attended Oberlin College, from which he was graduated.Afterwards he studied law, being admitted to the bar in 1865. Judge Titus was elected district attorney in 1878, holding office for two years.Two years later he was elected state senator from the 31st district, serving four years in the legislature. The next office he held was that of judge of the superior court.When this court was absorbed by the Supreme Court he became a justice of the Supreme Court. While in the state senate Judge Titus served on important committees.He was especially interested in measures affecting the Erie Canal. Judge Titus will be remembered as having defended Czolgôsz, the assassin of President William Mc Kinley.He was assigned with the late Loran L. Lewis, Sr., to this duty by the late Justice Truman C. White. Since July 1913, Judge Titus was commissioner of jurors, succeeding the late Henry H. Seymour. Judge Titus was a 33d degree Mason and a member of the supreme council of the Scottish rite.He was also a veteran of the Civil War.
