Hello Beth,
My name is Ken Grubb and my paternal great-grandmother was Mary Ann Tolfree. She was born in Portchester, Hampshire on 17/12/1827, the daughter of William/Mary. She married my great-grandfather, Thomas Grubb, on 13 Dec 1847 at St. Thomas, Portsmouth and they had 11 children.
I was born in Portsmouth and I don't know how familiar you are with the area. Portsea is now a district of the city of Portsmouth, a large naval port. In those days, Portsmouth and Portsea were separate communities and this sometimes causes confusion to a researcher.
Alverstoke lies on the other side of Portsmouth Harbourand is almost part of Gosport. Portchester lies to the north of Gosport/Alverstoke and is a very old community with the remains of a Roman fort. It's worth looking at Google Earth for the layout.
I do not research the Tolfree name due to lack of time.I already research my own name and the maiden name of my grandmother which is Didymus, would you believe?
If you wish to respond to this message then I suggest you contact me by e-mail since I don't often consult Genforum.
Kind regards
Ken Grubb, Cheltenham, Glos. U.K.
