I was looking in another section of my Tomkins notes last night and found another reference to WH Tonkin. It is from the three-volume Register of Admissions to the Middle Temple, published by HAC Sturgess in 1945.In vol I at p 367 we find the following:
12 Feb 1768 Warwick Hele Tonkin, only son of Digory Tonkin of Plymouth gent, admitted
26 Nov 1773 called to the Bar
8 May 1807 Bencher
Autumn 1810 Reader
1819 Treasurer.
Clearly not the same man as the officer in the 2nd Dragoon Guards - perhaps his father?
For readers from outside England, the Middle Temple is one of the Inns of Court (the ancient associations of barristers, ie lawyers) in London. Our man began his studies there in 1768 (he would probably have been in his early twenties, or possibly late teens), qualified in 1773, and later held various offices in the association.
