Thanks Alex.
The peerage books in Great Britain also agree with your remarks.
My own English ancestry is also said to derive from a HUGH TULL, Stapleford UK, in about 1470 though there is no way that we could be positive this is true.
Hugh Tull-John Tull-Thomas Tull-John Tull-Richard-Tull-Henry TOWLE.(about 1547) TOWLE is pronounced TOLL so these results of research, done in UK, are plausible.
Hugh Tull had a brother WILLIAM TULL who was the rector of TROWELL church in about 1440. The comparison of TULL, TOLL, TROWELL, and TOWLE is compelling BUT not in itself absolute proof that the family name is derived from a location, Trowell.
It is understandable that people want to be able to trace there ancestry back to the beginning of time but it is never going to happen.
One TOWLE researcher who traveled to the UK found that the TOWLE family once occupied DRAYCOTT HALL between Nottingham and Derby. This is in the vicinity of Stapleford. The building was a ruin in 1990
TROWELL is situated in the triangle of Nottingham, Stapleford and Ilkeston. William Tull ("TOLL") of "Trowell" or William (from) Trowell. i.e. William TOWLE. An interesting possibility.
