obituary of Mathew Tran, 1857-1942

1942. Mathew Tran, for many years a resident of Portland, passed away at his home on Academy street in the village early Sunday morning, following a long illness. Mr. Tran was born in Alberta, Canada, October 8, 1857, the son of Emanuel and Elizabeth Tran. At the age of seven he came to Michigan with his parents, who settled near Sebewa Center.
On January 1, 1889, he was married to Miss Nina Urie, who with three daughters survives him. The daughters are Mrs. Robert Button, of Greenville; Mrs. Roy Stiffler, of Eagle, and Mrs. Roy Winslow, of Ionia. There are also two brothers and one sister surviving, Eli Tran, of Flint; Elem Tran and Mrs. Florence Faylor, of Sebewa; seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Mr. Tran was employed by the village of Portland for many years until forced by ill health to give up his work.
Funeral services were held at the Bandfield chapel, Tuesday afternoon, in charge of Rev. Wm. Gray, of the Portland Congregational church, with burial in Portland cemetery.
