TREGERTHEN, St Ives, Cornwall
Looking to find connections with TREGERTHEN name in area surrounding St Ives - possibly Lelant, Phillack.
Known data- William Tregerthen married Hester Griffiths (believed London), as early as 1814. He was baptised 17.5.1799 St Andrews, Holborn, London and it is thought he moved with his bride to Bath, SOM to take up a teaching post as his occupation was Writing Master/Teacher. There is evidence of a Tregerthen Academy in Bath in the 1819 - 1823 period but William died 21.6.1823 aged 32. They had 2 daughter Louisa and Jane. I am descended from Louisa but Jane may never have married.
William may have had 7 siblings (at least 4 of these were also baptised 17.5.1799) and we know one, Augustus, married in Bath in 1814 and that when he died before 1848, his wife and 3 daughters went to Australia.3 girls in 1848 and mother in 1850.Others were John, Hannah, Jane (married John Payton), Samuel, George and Sarah.
William is believed to be the son of William Tregerthen (bap 9.12.1757 St Ives)and Jane Wallis by licence from St Ives, Cornwall married 5.9.1784. William's father again is believed to be John Tregerthen and Sarah Wallis married 4.5.1755 in Stratton, Cornwall though John appears to be baptised in St Ives 10.9.1732. It's not clear why he married at the other end of the County.
Also trying to make a connection with Charles Tregerthen born Bath but living in Clifton, Bristol according to 1861 and 1871 Census returns and his wife was Sophia. There appeared to be no children but Sophia married Henry Whyatt in 1876.
Also trying to identify links with Anthony Tregerthen and Grace Wallis. There is a record for Sarah and Grace being daughters of Richard Wallis and Martha. However it is thought Grace died after her marriage 10.7.1760, possibly in child-birth but no death record has yet been found. They had one daughter Elizabeth baptised 20.4.1762 and death record 7.6.1762. Anthony then remarried by banns to Sarah Mitchell 11.11.1773 Phillack, Cornwall.
There is no positive evidence of a connection with John Tregerthen and Anthony Tregerthen but since they married Sarah and Grace respectively it is thought brothers may have married sisters.
Any information would be helpful.
