AS an insightful and interesting twist of sorts to accompnay my other posting..
The lack of the "black" gunpowder in mass qauntities caused the American revolutionary Soliers to be in dire straits to fire there weapons. Some soldiers found out that if they tore pieces of the swabs they used to ram the barrels they could fire one or two more shots, because of the powder residue, albeit at smaller range.
they could fire their weapons and it would produce a shot with little or no "smoke" hence the term Smokeless.
Observors once they saw this talked about it and some men tried to experiment with the Idea of smokeless powder producing a chemical combination of cotton and other chemiclas into a slurry of sorts. This is what is know as the more profficient and accurate Gun Powder in the World used today to fire almost all weapons used that are not Muzzleloaders or Flintlocks.Smokeless Powder is Produced in mass quantities at the Radford Army Ammunition Plant on the New River. For small caliber to Medium caliber to the 120 mm Tank Rounds used in M1 Abrams Tanks and 155 mm Howitzers.
I thought that was kind of Ironic yet shows the American Spirit of ingenuity..
What we used to in desperate times ( THE RAM SWABS ) to win our Freedoms has been developed to make our Armies superior in the World today. and All of our NATO countries use the Same Powder.
