Troy's in Virginia - circa 1827
I've found a lot of Irish Troy's in these forums...so now lets look for some of the African American ones....
It took me two years to find, but William Troy was born in 1827 in Essex County Virginia. He was a free black man.He married in Virginia, but left in 1848 to go to Cincinnati, Ohio because he was disalusioned by the hipocracy in the church. He studied religion and became Rev. William Troy.
William was the minister in a church in Amherstburg, Ontario Canada and in Windsor, Ontario, Canada.Ontario was known as Canada West from 10 February 1841 to 1 July 1867, so the information that I have identifies his as being from Canada West.
I know he had at least 4 children because they are mentioned in a letter his daughter wrote in 1860...Annie, Willie, Joshua and Fanny (who wrote the letter).
My great-grandfather is Joshua and we know that he was 48 year old when my grandfather, Willis, was born in 1908 in Philadelphia, PA.
I haven't been able to locate any more information about William, his parents or his children.(In my searches, I've found 3 different names for my great-grandather...but Joshua seems to be the consistent one.I suspect that William's children were all born in Canada West and that they didn't return to the US until after the Civil War, which is why I am having so much trouble tracking them.
Anyone know of any connections????I also don't know where the name TROY came from.I can't find any other Troy's in Virginia in that time period (marriage record searches, etc) so I doubt that William got that name from a slave owner. (His father was a slave.)and I can't find any Troys that immigrated from Ireland that may have owned land in Virginia early enough to be William's grandfather (his father was the son of the master, but his mini-autobiography doesn't give us any names.)
We know from William's autobiography that his father lived on plantation called Hunter's Hill, but I haven't been able to locate that in Virginia either (I guess this means my next vacation is to Essex County Viginia).
