Benjamin Tutt of SC held the military rank of Captain before and during most of the Revolutionary War, but by the Battle of Eutaw Springs in Sept 1781, he had been promoted to the rank of Major. He received pay for Rev War service as a Major.Even so, many men who served under him referred to him as Captain long after he passed away. There are many documents referring to him as Captain Benjamin Tutt.
There were legal/land connections of some stripe between Thomas Lamar and Benjamin Tutt, but I have never fully researched them.Edgefield County Deed Book 16, pp 540-541 contain a deed that mentions a suit by Barbara Tutt vs Thomas Lamar (Barbara was Benjamin's wife/widow).Also, Edgefield County Deed Book Y-4, pp. 20-21 mentions land that a Thomas Lamar had purchased from Benjamin Tutt.I don't have the full deeds in either instance, only synopses.
