Re: Mary Tutwiler, b. 1844/47
Hi again Kyle,
I appreciate your thoughts re my Mary. The information I have about her came down to me from my grandmother, who was a granddaughter of Mary and Charles Spates. Mary died before she was born, but she knew "Grandpa" Spates very well and I have a photo of him. Also, I have the Kentucky Death Certificate for one of Charles and Mary's children (Mary) which indicates that they were her parents.
My question is whether Mary, daughter of Jonathan Tutwiler, is my Mary. There were several "Mary Tutwilers" born in the Valley area during the mid-1840's, but I found other marriages for all of them. My on-line search for a marriage bond in Rockingham County for Charles and Mary was not successful - the records seem incomplete, possibly because there was a war going on. Their first child was born August 1866, suggesting a marriage in 1864/65.
There are a couple of circumstantial factors that might link them. One, Charles apparently descended from a German mercenary soldier, captured in the Revolutionary War, who stayed behind after it ended. Also, he grew up in a heavily German district of Loudoun County. Second, he enlisted and served in the Jefferson Guards, 2nd Virginia Infantry; he was either wounded or ill, and hospitalized in Staunton, not far from the Tutwilers. Maybe it was an opportunity for two, possibly German-speaking, young people to meet.
Thanks again for your help.
