Ann, thanks...Yes, I do remember the conversation, and I apologize if you were offended by that remark. Actually at the time, I hand in mind a more dramatic comparison: McDonough, IL relative to Beaver, UT.
I lived in Illinois for 10yrs, just 40 miles from where the Joshua/Ephraim Twitchell family lived (Emmet Twp., McDonough county, IL). I am amazed how the family simply packed up, sold their premium farm land, and followed the Mormons west.
No doubt there is beautiful scenery in and around San Benito county, CA., and certainly near Beaver in the Fish-Lake and Dixie National Forest area.
Still, in the future, I will be a bit more careful how I characterize and compare geographic locations.
By the way, I have driven my truck to the top of San Juan Canyon--it ends at Freemont Peak, State Park--a beautiful vantagepoint.
