John Urie Photographer
I have just purchased an old book Published in 1908 by A.Gardner of paisley, Scotland, titled Reminiscences of Eighty Years, author JOHN URIE.
It is an interesting book which tells of his life and the changes he has seen in 80 years.
He was born in Paisley in 1820 the son of a handloom weaver, and he grew up to become a famous Photographer, in fact he was the first photographer in Glasgow.
He writes abouthis parents, cousin and a nephew but does not mention them by name, the only one he mention by name is a brother Bob, he also writes about his Gr Grandfather and I Quote " Ours was a covenanting stock, and my Great Grandfather was one of the number who laid down their lives for the cause, he was a printer in Glasgow, and Editor of the first newspaper published in the city, his sad fate was to be shot at polmadie for his adherence to the principles of the covenant, and, along with three others who suffered martyrdom at the time, he was buried in Cathcart Churchyard where a large tablet still commemorates the event.
Some of the detail is differant from my Posting of 30th april ( John Urie Murdered 1685 ) which I got from a Glasgow web site, so which one is more accurate is any bodies guess.
In the preface of the book at the bottom he signs it John Urie, Dennistoun, November 1907
If this is of any Interest to anybody e-mail me and I will give you facts such as his business adresses.
Alex
