Replying to my own post - it does appear that the 1790/1800 Cumberland N.C. William Utley is William Jr. With one or two small problems the census data corresponds to the William Jr. and Dorcas family as I have it recorder (males/females, birth dates).

This makes Joseph Griffin a very strong candidate for being Coleman and Henry's father.

William Utley
Cumberland

1790

(1) Male 16 and over
(2) Males under 16
(6) Females

That would be William and Dorcas with (2) sons and (5) daughters

Son1 - Allen age 22 (1768) probably left home by 1790
----
Son2 - Jacob age 13 (1777)
Son3 - William III age 10 (1780)
----

----
Dau1 - Sarah age 19 (1771)
Dau2 - Joice age 16 (1774)
Dau3 - Fereby age 6 (1784)
Dau4 - Charlotte age 4 (1786)
Dau5 - Rebecca age -1.. (1791) <--<< slight problem but close
----

1800

(1) Male 16-25
(1) Male 45 and over
(1) Female under 10
(2) Females 10-15
(2) Females 16-25
(1) Female 45 and over

William (1744 - age 46) is the male 45 and over,, but Dorcas (1751) would have only been 39 and not over 45.. small problem..

Son2 (Jacob) would be 23 and probably has left home

-----
Son3 - William III would be 20 which fits with the one son still at home.
-----

now for the girls

-----
Dau6 - Edith age 7 (1793)

Dau5 - Rebecca age 10
Dau4 - Charlotte age 14

Dau3 - Fereby age 16
Dau2 - Joice age 26
------
Dau1 - Sarah 29 and must have left home by 1800
