It appears that there is quite a bit of confusion as to the birthplaces of William Utley Sr and his children. Perhaps these deeds will help to place the residence of William Utley during different periods:

Northampton Co, NC deed. Robert Parker of Northampton Co., merchant, to Thomas Parker of Northampton Co. Whereas Thomas Parker and Martha his wife did sell to Sm. Moore on 15May 1742 a certain tract of land adjoining the land of Col. Little, dec'd. and the land of Robert Sims 100 acres bought by Martha in her widowhood from Jos. Sims, the said Robert Parker makes over to Thomas Parker the said tract. Wit. John Haywood, William Utley, Mary Haywood. May 19, 1744.

Edgecombe Co., NC deed. William Carter son of George Carter dec'd. of Edgecombe Co. to Joseph Lane of Edgecombe Co. Esq. 16 pounds current money of VA. 200 acres at the mouth of Scots branch on the S side of Beech Sw. as by patent to George Carter Nov. 20, 1739. Wit. Henry Pope, William Utley. Aug. 22, 1749. Reg. Edgecombe Co. Nov. Ct. 1749.

Edgecombe Co., NC deed. Thomas Moy of Edgecombe Co. to Henry Pope of Edgecombe Co. 45 pounds of current money of VA. 104 acres in the fork of Long Branch on the S side of Beech Sw. joining Wm. Murphey's former land, the branch & the swamp, all houses, orchards etc. as by patent to Wm. Murphy Nov. 6, 1730. Wit. Joseph Lane, Wm. Utley. Aug. 5, 1751. Reg. Edgecombe Co. Aug. Ct. 1751.

Edgecombe Co., NC deed. Wm. Utley of Edgecombe Co., planter, to John Turbufield of Edgecombe Co. 18 pounds current money of VA. 188 acres joining Murphey, Long Branch, and Impassable swamp, all houses, orchards etc., a grant to sd. Utley. Wit. Henry Pope, Thomas Lane. Apr. 28, 1753. Reg. Edgecombe Co. May Ct. 1753.

Joseph Turbefield of Edgecombe Co., planter, to Walter Turbefield of Edgecombe Co., planter. 15 pounds current money of VA. 100 acres in Murphey's pocosin, all houses, orchards etc., a Granville grant to William Utley Apr. 27, 1753. Orange Co., NC land warrant. Thomas Barker 700 acres White Oak Swamp beginning on William Utley's line, surveyed Sept. 2, 1761, deed Dec. 6, 1761. Mar. 6, 1761.

Johnston Co., NC deed. William Utley the Elder and William Utley witnessed a deed from Howel Jones and wife Mary Jones to Joseph Hancock. Feb. 13, 1762

Johnston Co., NC deed. Joseph Lane of Johnston Co. to William Utley 150 acres on N side Swift Creek being part of cirvey taken up by Joseph Lane and conveyed by deed to William Utley. Wit. John Watson, Thomas Horne. Feb. 15, 1762

The land in Edgecombe Co was probably near Enfield as reflected by these later Halifax Co deeds. (Halifax was formed from Edgecombe)
