Hi Kathy,
While there's nothing about grapes or vines in any of John Vallee's Franklin Co., Missouri land records he owned around 114 acres in Beouf township worth $10,000 in 1870 according to the census.
This is my source for the returned-to-France story: "John Vallee, my grandfather was a widower when he married Mary Mulhall but his (first) family was (living) in France. His (first) wife died there. He had grown children (by his first wife) so he must have been much older than my grandmother (Mary Mulhall). Maybe that will give you some idea as to why he returned to France and he died there. I have always known this. I met Mary Keister, my fathers sister, but she never mentioned anything about her parents." Letter of Mrs. Anna Vallee Tuohy, 30 Aug 1983
Mary Vallee Kiester died in Los Angeles 1 Mar 1942. I believe Mary Mulhall Vallee's death certificate is at http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/resources/deathcertificates/http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/resources/deathcertificates/, search for Mary Valley who died in 1920 in St. Louis Co. Victoria Vallee was my wife, she passed away three years ago. Your grandfather must have been Vicki's uncle, John Thomas "Jack" Vallee III, born 26 Sep 1915 and that would make my two daughters (1974 & 1976) your second cousins.
