Just to follow-up on a comment I made about John Vancleave and his service in Capt. Chenoweth's company of militia. I mentioned he was listed on the payroll in the Illinois papers. These records are available on microfilm at the Libary of Virginia. A partial bibliographic citation is: "Call Number APA 208 Miscellaneous reel 1384 Author Virginia. Auditor of Public Accounts (1776-1928) Title Illinois papers, : 1779-1784. documents 1-201, muster rolls and payrolls of Kentucky militia, Material 1.25 cu. ft. References Auditor of Public Accounts Inventory, entry 208. Summary These records are part of Auditor of Public Accounts. Administration of State Government: Military Expenditures - Revolutionary War. Illinois Department. Board of Western Commissioners. This series contains muster rolls and payrolls of Kentucky militia, including names, dates of service, and amounts paid. Other Format Also available on microfilm, Miscellaneous reel 1384."
These documents are also cited in the "Roster of Soldiers and Patriots of the American Revolution Buried in Indiana" by the Indiana DAR (with various reprints by GPC). Also online at Ancestry. This was the source of the cryptic reference I had, with the original source being on film at the LVA.
