Carl Leo/Casper Leo Van den Heurk

By Tandy Shields June 21, 2003 at 07:58:09

I'm looking for anyone related to my grandfather who called himself both Carl Leo and Casper Leo Van den Heurk.I don't the reason, but he didn't tell the truth about his age....possibly to be an Army reservist during WWI, or to be able to get work during the Depression.I knew he claimed to have been born in Bay City, Mi, so I checked their records and found the following listing:"Van Denherk - Casper - Male - Hampton, on May 12, 1868.Parents - Francis Van Denherk - Hampton, farmer, born in Holland, and Adrianna Van Denherk, born in Holland.Date of record: June 17, 1869. Vol. A, Page 17."He died in Memphis, TN abt. 1932.I am certain he was married more than once. One son, Casper Leo Van den Heurk, a cotton broker, died 3/19/28, at age 35, in Memphis. My mother was 3 at the time, but she's certain there were other children.By his second (?) wife, Hattie Irene Greene, he had two children--a son John and a daughter Maxey Ann.Supposedly, my grandfather's parents were from near the Belgian border of the Netherlands and one preferred speaking Flemish to Dutch. He told my mother that they died when he was young, and that he then traveled west (don't know if that meant across a couple of counties or across the US) with an uncle.
