Margariete VanGorder Bradford County, PA
My 4th great grandmother was Margariete/Margarete VanGorder who married Jeremiah French. Place of birth, date of birth and date of death unknown.I previously posted when the Genforum board for VanGorder first began.
I do have a copy of the research conducted by Greenleaf S. VanGorder that I located in the Buffalo & Erie County Library that includes two possibilites for Margariete/Margarete.
From that research is found Margaret VanGorder born December 14, 1754, daughter of Johannes(John) VanGorder and Margaret Quick.Siblings were John, Elizabeth, Jacobus, Sara, Samuel, Cornelius and Peter.
The second is a Margriete VanGorder baptized April 17, 1746 at Walpack, NJ, daughter of Gysbert VanGorder and Rachel Cortright (Kortricht). Siblings were Maria, Hester, Eliphas and Gysbert.
Further from my great grandfather's (John C. French) book, The Passenger Pigeon in Pennsylvania," comes the following two excerpts:
"....Jeremiah French had served through the Revolutionary War and then traveled up the Susquehanna from his father's farm, near Shamokin, to Bradford County, where he soon married Miss Margaret VanGorder and took her to a farm on the Chemung River, north of Elmira, New York."
Regarding Jeremiah & Margariete's one son William, Grandpa French further writes:
"....It was an old Indian clearing where my grandfather was born and remained until 1834, when he removed to the Pennsylvania forest in Tioga County and made himself a home for all his remaining years of life.He went to the VanGorder home, on Towanda Creek, during May, 1810, for a brief stay with his mother's people, and to work for awhile in a sawmill for Amos Bennett.
Back to the Greenleaf VanGorder research there is:
John (Johannes) VanGorder, (William, Albert, G., Gysbert Albert, Albert.) b. Oct. 13, 1736, Minnisink. Married Maria (Mollie) VanKlief (Clief) born unknown.
Children - Isaac, Antje, Albartus, John, William, Abraham, Manuel, Lawrence, Hulda, Mary and Lydia(?).
The notation reads (Abraham, Isaac, Albert and Amanuel (Manuel) all moved from Ulster Co., N.Y. to the neighborhood of Penn Yan, about 1800.The others moved to Chemung Co., NY, about 1830.)
To further muddy the waters there is Simon VanGorder, (Lawrence, John, William, Albert G., Gysbert, Albert.)b. July 31, 1700, d. Aug. 23, 1890, married 1823 Jennie Fish. He removed from Delaware Co.,NY to Bradford Co., Penn., about 1843.Children were Charles, Larone, Billings, Joh, Robert B., Sarah and Hiram w.
There are other VanGorders who removed to Pennsylvania but these seem to be the best possiblities.I'm stuck trying to match up my Margariete with these families.
I do have from that same research a marriage between a Jeremiah French, who is believed to be a grandson of my 4th great grandfather married to Ophelia Charlotte VanGorder, born Dec. 21, 1843, daughter of Andrew DeNede VanGorder and his first wife Mihala Jane Benjamin.Apparently Andrew was born 1817, Dingman's Ferry, died Jan. 7, 1887 at Monroetown, Penn. This Jeremiah French and Ophelia Charlotte resided in Chemung County, New York.
Any help in solving this puzzle would be greatly appreciated.
