After 15 years of research, I've discovered that John Long was already married when he migrated to North Carolina and the NewRiver Valley.

I think the confusion is related to John's son, and my g,g,g grandpa, Tobias Long, who married another Susannah Vannoy after his first wife, Frances Stamper, died in 1835.
