Alexander is my 5th ggf thru his marriage to Elizabeth Corwin.I have some info on him and his ancestors. The notes are my own from the misc. info I have been able to glean here and there.I included the documentation on the info I am sure of. Unfortunately, I have no documentation from the The AG Cooper book. The book is full of info, but I only had copies so I don't know if a Bibliography was included in the text.
BIRTH-PARENTS-SPOUSE-MARRIAGE-CHILDREN-DEATH:A Place Called Sodom, by AG Cooper, page 25-26. RESIDENCE:Warren Co. Tax Records of 1803, page 277; Tax Records of 1810. MARRIAGE1-SPOUSE1:Bourbon Co., KY Marriage Records 1788-1850 as provided by firstname.lastname@example.org via the Internet.
This gentleman is very elusive considering the many marriages and subsequent children!Especially his early years with his mother! She married a Mr. Drake and they moved into PA.I believe that Mary's first husband was Daniel Van Pelt, son of Alexander and Jane (GANO) Van Pelt.Daniel wasa Revolutionary War soldier who died fighting for the Patriots in Brooklyn Heights at the Battle of Long Island on August 27, 1776.
Alexander moved into Redstone County in Western Pennsylvania around 1793-94. It isn't sure if he was accompanied by his mother and step-father or if they followed later.
By 1803 Alexander migrated into Warren Co. OH and lived in the township of Turtle Creek near the town of Lebannon. His civic activities included a position on the first jury impanelled in Warren Co., OH on Dec 3, 1803. Listed with Alexander is Ichabod Corwin, (his wife's [Elizabeth Corwin] Uncle) who founded the town of Lebannon.
Alexander fought in the War of 1812 under General William Henry Harrison. It is possible that he participated in the campaign at Tippecanoe on November 7, 1811.Alexander's first wife, Elizabeth Corwin died in April 1814, in Lebannon, Warren Co. OH.Alexander remarried in Nov 1814 to Elizabeth (Pearce) Crain.
It is unsure when Alexander and his family moved into Shelby Co., IN.An obituary for his son, Squire L. Van Pelt in the THESHELBYVILLEDAILYDEMOCRAT on Saturday, January 12, 1907, page 1 column 1 wrote that he moved to Shelby County when Squire was but 2 years old.He aquired land there in 1820.Squire was born in Sept 1819, so while the dates are not exact, they are close enough to warrant a good guess that 1820 was when Alexander came to Shelby County.Alexander moved his family of 11 to Flat Rock River near Conn's Creek. His son Daniel was born there 2 years later.
I have Alexanders' death date of 27 May 1849, but I do not have documentation or a location for it.
Do you know if Alexander's daughter, Eliza, married William Major in 1836, Shelby Co. IN?I found it listed on a website, but wasn't sure if it was the correct Eliza. There is a second Eliza A.Vanpelt listed in the websites Probate records, but it is as a minor heir in 1861 under the guardianship of Job Tindall.Michael Purce VanPelt is listed as dec'd with no date.I'm thinking Purce should be Pearce?
