ALL RIGHT!!! I want to figure out whether some of us match DNA with Vliet/Van Der Fleet, etc To that end, have started a Flatt DNA project and I would like to create this a joint project with Vliet/Van Vleet, Van Der Fleet, etc. If it turns out after some time that there is absolutely no match between these lines, we can always split them out into 2 projects.
The idea is that if you are a male with an unbroken line of Flatt or Van Vleet descent, by taking the DNA test and then matching it up as others take it as well, you can determine for certain common ancestors. I've been involved as an attentive witness to a couple of other DNA projects that involve the Bates and the Witt/Whitt surname and it has been, in some cases surprising to see what has been learned. For example, one family was shown NOT to have the common ancestor they thought, another family which was *parentless* was shown to be directly related to another branch as brothers in same family and in another case, an unproven tradition was proven to be true-that certain men thought to be brothers were, actually. (Note- I am coordinating this but cannot take the test myself because it must a direct line Van Vleet-however, if you're female and wish to get some results, have a direct male line Van Vleet take it as your proxy.)
We have a tradition in the Flatt line about stemming from Derick Jansz Van Der Vliet 1612-1689, coming over on the Spotted Cow to New Netherlands. I very much want to see whether Van Vleet matches up and this is true. Let's get this started to sort out some family lines.
