Anyone who has info that might help me- an examination of records on the TN tennessee VanWinkles show 2 main families/James VanWinkle born about 1800 [said to be born in North Carolina by one son in 1900] This James perhaps born in NC - we know had Indiana IN relatives and was in TN by the early 1820's - he married about 1822 Patience Scarbrough [born 1807 Knox Co TN] of White Co TN.
They had 5 boys and no girls - the boys were Wiley R [[ca1827] - Thomas - Jesse - James P and Jacob all born in TN except the last boy Jacob was born in Indiana in 1831 [last child] on a visit to relatives. They returned to White Co TN and father James is thought to have died about 1849. At the end of the civil war son Jacob above returns to relatives in Indiana due to the famine in Cumberland Co TN and returns after things have improved. Family tradition from the 1800's said the family had come from New Jersey NJ
A cousin? Issac VanWinkle born 1790 SC south carolina is the other VanWinkle family branch in TN and usually lives in a neighboring county and finally the same county. The children of Issac head off to KY Kentucky and IL Illinois - I think?
The above is what I know - in checking NC in the late 1700's I found Michael,James, and Abraham VanWinkle starting in the 1780's. Benjemin in 1800 NC. It seems some of thier descendents went to SC KY and Indiana IN Just by naming patterns and if the info was correct that my James was NC born then I suspect that the James above in 1780's NC may be his father or grandfather.
Can anyone shed some light or point me in the right direction. I feel the key to my group is the a history on the Indiana VanWinkles and prior to this Issac born in 1790 SC and James said? to be born about ca1800 NC -so the history of the North Carolina and South Carolina Vanwinkles is also part of the story.
If this James who returned to Indiana in 1830-1 if he bought land and stayed a while then I did note a 1832 deed in Perry Co IN which may? be him. I really dont know where he went in Indiana for sure.
I note in Wayne Co KY 1820 census Issac - Joel - John -Micajah which I think connect to Joel and wife Polly VanWinkle on a 1827 Fentress county TN deed also Abner,Joel and Issac are listed are in Morgan Co TN in the 1824-7 period. I suspect this is the same Abner and Joel that appear in Morgan Co IL in the 1840's and 50's. Another of interest is John S VanWinkle who goes with Issac b1790SC from Morgan Co TN to Cumberland Co TN [formed 1856 county surveyed by Issac VanWinkle formed from Morgan,White,Bledsoe and other TN counties] John S VanWinkle son? of Issac moves to Danville KY Boyle Co KY] and owns land there and in Wayne Co KY also Morgan Co TN and Cumberland Co TN. John S VanWinkle will 1882 - proved 1888 Boyle Co KY proved 1905 Wayne Co KY wife named as Louisa Dillon VanWinkle.
Also Cumberland County TN Miscellaneous records Book B page 404 W.B. Ceicel rep himself and heirs of John S VanWinkle deceased of Danville KY County of Boyle declares ownership of notes on 16,000 acres of land sold by W B Ceisel and John S VanWinkle to JohnB Neely recorded in records of Morgan and Cumberland County TN. signed Nov 4 1890
Can you shed some light on these people - I am of course most interested in the James VanWinkle my line at the top - but the second family group Issac and John S who seem to live in nearby areas may hold the key to my group.
