Dolly Vardell Burnett - Rutherford County TN
This was found in the book "Rutherford County TN Chancery Court Minutes 1845 - 1867". May be interesting to Vardell researchers should there be any who have not already read it.
"DOLLIE BURNETT versus JOHN GRANVILLE BURNETT. Parties were intermarried on 1 Mar 1864 in Rutherford County. Defendant has violated his marital vows and committed adultery. They have an infant son. The bonds of matrimony are dissolved. Their son, Thomas Watson Vardell, is committed to Complainant. She is allowed to assume her former name of Dollie Vardell. 1 Nov 1867. (P. 404)"
In the 1870 census of District 21 of Rutherford County TN, Dolly Burnett is found in the household of her mother, Margaret Vardell, with her 4 year old son Thomas Burnett. In 1880 she is found in the same district as Dolly Vardell. In 1887 tax records taxes were paid Feb 15, 1888 on 40 acres shown as owned by Dolly Vardell. This appears to be the same 40 acres on which taxes were paid in, at least, the years 1877 thru 1885 except in those years the owner is given as Margaret Vardell. In the years 1888 through 1890 the owner's name is given as Dolly Vardell, Est. and the taxes were shown as now delinquent. This would indicate that Dolly died around 1888. On July 7, 1901 25 acres in District 21 were sold for taxes. The owner's name was given as Mrs. D. Vardell. My research is incomplete and I, therefore, have no explanation as to why the 40 acres was reduced to 25 acres by the time it was sold and cannot be sure if both entries were referring to the same property. Given that Margaret Vardell is shown as the owner through 1885 would indicate that Margaret died some time in the mid 1880's. However, I have not found her in the 1880 census which, of course, does not prove she had passed away by then. That the taxes were paid in her name does not prove she was still living by 1885 either. In another branch of my family taxes were paid in the name of a 2nd great grandmother for almost 10 years after she is proven to have died.
I would appreciate any additional info, clues or ideas as to when Margaret, Martha or Dolly died. Thanks.
