The Vassals of New England, book, pub 1862
I have purchased from eBay the book, the Vassalls of New England and Their Immediate Descendants, by Edward Doubleday Harris of Cambridge, Mass; pub. 1862.
It lists the family genealogy starting with John Vassall, alderman of London, who in 1588 fitted out and commanded two ships of war, with which he joined the royal navy to oppose the Spanish armada. He was the descendant of an ancient French family, traced back, it is claimed, to the 11th century of the House of Du Vassall, Barons de Guerden, in Querci, Perigord. He had sons Samuel and William, and one other.
The book traces the family into America, ending with Benjamin Vassall, b. Sep 18, 1742, twice married, of Scituate, Massachusetts. Also, William Vassall, b. 1781, married Anne, only daughter of Col. Samuel Oliver of Belgrave, before Dec 2, 1817 and died at Oldbury court, England, March 13, 1845.
