The naming of V-land, or formally known as Velzyland was named after Dale Velzy of Velzy Surfboard fame. He's an old codger now, but still doing well. (I can say this as he is a cousin). *¿*
Anyway, Dale made surfboards in the old days (1950's), with Balsa wood, maybe even out of redwood, but pretty sure he began with balsa. He is very well known as a "pioneer of surfing". Dale then progressed to foam boards and paddle boards. An old Velzy board could be worth some money, if they can be found?
It is said that V-land was Dale's favorite spot, but only the "Hawk" could tell you for sure why this spot was named after him.
The last time I was over there, I noticed a lot of housing going in. :-(
You could certainly find out much more by going to Google.com and just putting the word Velzy into the search engine. There has been alot written about him.
As for the name Velzy, it's origin is Dutch. The Van having been dropped and the Velzy part changed depending on how a branch of the family spelled it in the very, very old days.
Our branch stuck with the spelling of Velzy, and if it is spelled that way, it's almost a sure thing the person is related to the forefather's.
