I am descended from Juliana Jewell Simmons Rickenbaker, Emma Jewell Veronee's father's sister. Emma's parents were Daniel John Jewell of Charleston, SC and Cecelia Catherine Ohring Dennehy (perhaps born in Ireland) of the Orangeburg/Blackville area of SC. Daniel's father was Benjamin Jewell, a Jew b. in Hanover, Prussia who immigrated from London arriving in Savannah, Georgia about December of 1790 where he had a shop. There, he met his wife Sophia or Sophie Prevost (married abt. 1795) who immigrated to Georgia after the slave uprising in Santa Domingo in 1791 where her father was killed.Sophie's mother, who was of French ancestry, and some of her siblings arrived in Savannah by 1794.The family was from Cap Francois, St. Domingo. The Jewells moved to Charleston abt. 1804 after living on the Savannah RIver in Barnwell District, SC. Sophie is buried in Union Methodist Churchyard in Cope, SC where she may have been living with her son Alexander Storne, MD, her only child by her second husband Joseph Storne, MD.Perhaps, this is how Daniel and Catherine met although both Juliana's husbands were from Orangeburg where she lived.
See famous Supreme Court case Jewell vs. Jewell for more info. on Sophie and Benjamin's divorce. He married second Sarah Isaacs, a Jewish woman from Richmond, and moved to Pointe Coupee Parish, LA. and had more children.
